Fur: Faux Pas

I don't think it's necessary to torture these animals for their skin because it isn't saving yours.

Product demand drives this industry, so you can do your part by being a responsible consumer.

I've published these pix with permission from the good people who organized this event: www.WildAtHeart-Online.com and www.FurIsDead.com

It's just unfathomable to me why anyone, in this day and age, would choose to wear fur. I don't think there's any more thorough way to flip the bird at nature than by donning a mink coat...

"Oh, you like this? Guess what someone did for me to make this: they bred some animals, raised them, and cared for them. Then they killed them, and took the fur off them. And I don't care what they did with the rest, but goddamn, whatever the 'rest' was, it sure did look good in this fur. And now I look good in it. Actually, I look great in it. Now, let me get in my SUV, and please put those red spray-paint cans away. Please."

Meanwhile, I'm not a vegetarian. Does this make me a hypocrite?

Are you influenced differently if you are a vegetarian? I’m sure you are – but we can still agree that torturing these animals is unacceptable.

I heard/read that in many cases the animals are stunned – (not killed because it could damage the pelt) – and the skin is ripped off causing the animal to be jolted back to consciousness. There is so much information to confirm that harvesting fur is an inhumane (and disgusting!) practice.

We could stay warm in faux fur but then fur foes would argue that I’m glamourizing the wearing of real fur. Fair enough. How about recycling fur? After so many years of torturing and killing animals for their skins, surely we have enough to go around. Older fur can be used for trims etc. But alas, we’ll be back to square one when buying already-existing fur becomes more expensive than killing the animals to get it.

There is another alternative: Don’t Wear Fur. If there’s no demand, there’ll be no need for product.
