Crikey!

I just saw the news report of conservationist Steve Irwin's death today. Reports indicate that the famed "Croc Hunter" was pierced in the heart by a stingray's barb while filming for a documentary entitled "The Ocean's Deadliest".

Tragic irony - as he had a tendancy to provoke animals to get them to display their defensive behaviour. Then, on the other hand - just tragic!

I was talking about this earlier today with a friend, and we agreed that, for Steve Irwin, it'd probably have been the way he would've chosen to go out. Mind you, he has a wife and two young kids, and that's gotta be rough. But he went out in the very act of putting together an educational film, trying to help people learn about the frailty and wonders of the natural world, which was his passion, and that certainly is commendable.

Rest in peace, Croc Hunter.

Yeah. The guy was hero to some and he died for his cause. I don't like your unfeeling response and I don't think he 'provoked' animals.

What's more ironic is that the Stingray is one of the gentler sea creatures and death from an attack is very rare. Humbling lesson here... one that I've observed and often "preach" about so-called "experts". Okay, I'm going off on a tangent (the trekkies equivalent of a wormhole I suppose) - often we hear one expert argue with another with opposing views... which is the "expert"? An expert is generally someone who spent more time studying something than the layman who just spent time thinking about it. This has led to what I like to call the American Syndrome Syndrome. For fame and fortune it seems these experts go in search of normal (negative) human behavior, assign it a name and write a book. Voila! Instant fame via spots on the Today Show and Oprah. No one stops to say, hey... that's blarney! They soak it all up and then kids are medicated for ADD or Bullying.

Okay, back to the topic - I admired the "Croc Hunter" and was entertained by his bravery that sometimes bordered on insanity except for his genuine and lovable manner. I offer this short poem:

Forgive me Steve Irwin for not having known your name, it was with "crocs" that you've made your fame. To film the "Ocean's Deadliest" feature, you must have felt you were an "expert" with all creatures.

The Croc Hunter as is referred to worldwide has touched the lives of many viewers. His antics may have been questionable to the point where persons may have been quite angry with him but you have to admit the man was a "Dare Devil". He's a hero to many & his program was always educational. May his soul rest in peace. To his family i extend my condolences.

His family declined the state funeral. I was surprised that the state even offered one. Don't get me wrong, I admired his work and I'll certainly miss his antics, but I figured that state funerals were only for, well, statesmen.

When I heard the devasting news about Steve Irwin, I was in total shock. As an Australian, words cannot simply describe the emotion I felt after hearing the news, just knowing how much he had become an icon in the Australian public and also around the world. The Crocodile Hunter appeared as an invincible guy to me. No matter how much crazy stuff he did, he would always survive to tell the tales. But to see so many pictures of young children in the newspapers paying their respects to a true aussie legend, just makes this even a more tragic real life story. I just feel so much for his wife and two kids, it is just so sad. His death will
definitely leave one massive hole in the Australian public.
